Three Men Arrested for Assualt and Attempted Murder, After A Drunken Fight at the USC/UCLA Football Game

A drunken fight broke out in the Rose Bowl parking lot before the USC-UCLA football game Saturday. Two men were sent to the hospital with stab wounds and three people to jail, one of them on suspicion of attempted murder.

The fight started about 4:30 p.m. in parking lot 1 of the Rose Bowl, where many people had been tailgating and drinking since 6:30 a.m. before the big game. According to Cmdr. Darryl Qualls, police that arrived at the scene found 50 to 75 people fighting. It took more than 15 minutes to break up the fight and two officers received minor injuries.

According to witnesses the fight broke out after a group of tailgaters, including Patel, threw a football that accidentally hit a black Mercedes-Benz belonging to another group of fans who were also tailgating. Three men from the other group confronted Patel and at some point began stabbing him.

Arturo Cisneros, 44, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Joshua Elder, 23, and Steve Radu, 27, were arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

When an assault is committed against a police officer, the punishments are usually increased. The requirement is that the assault on the police officer must have been performed while the officer was performing in the scope of their duties, and the person committing the assault must know that the person is a police officer and are performing their duties. Assault, which is described as the willful application of physical force upon another person, is not a crime when the assault was done in self-defense or in the defense of another person.
