Sex Offenders Warned Not to Interact With Children on Halloween

Murrieta police have mailed letters to the 43 registered child sex offenders living in the city, suggesting that they leave their porch light off on Halloween and post a sign stating that they are not giving out candy. The letter from police chief Mark Wright reads, "To avoid any unnecessary allegations of impropriety with minors, I strongly suggest you protect yourself by voluntarily refraining from interacting with the children during the trick-or-treat holiday."

This is the third year that Murrieta police mail this letter. Historically, police haven't logged any crimes done by sex offenders on Halloween, the letter is sent just as a precaution. There are many cities in Riverside county attempting to impose bans and regulate the activities of registered sex offenders on Halloween. A researcher form the University of Oklahoma examined Halloween laws against sex offenders and found that the holiday did not produce a increase in sex crimes against children. The study found that children had a larger risk of being hit by a car on Halloween.
