Joseph Mendoza, a 12 year old boy, was shot to death on August 8, 2012, as he was standing on a sidewalk in the city’s Lower Ocean neighborhood near the San Lorenzo River.
According to police reports and witness statements, the suspects pulled up in a vehicle and multiple shots were fired.
After much investigation, police connected the shooting to Norteño street gang activity. Five reputed members have been arrested including Andrew Carerra, 19, and four juveniles.
The four juvenile suspects were actually on probation during the killing of the 12 year old boy.
Two of the four juveniles are 15 and were taken into custody at group homes in Exeter. The other two are 17 and were taken to the Santa Cruz Juvenile Hall.
Police stated a sixth suspect could be arrested next week. The motive of the shooting is pending investigation.
All suspects will likely face murder charges and there is a chance that the juveniles may be tried as adults due to the severity of the crime committee. They face 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
